Florida Edges Carolina In Marathon Contest

Tkachuk's OT Winner Lifts Panthers in Game 1 Thriller

Florida Edges Carolina in Marathon Contest

Matthew Tkachuk's late heroics gave the Florida Panthers a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. With just 13 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime period, Tkachuk swatted in a rebound past Carolina goaltender Antti Raanta to secure the dramatic triumph.

The thrilling conclusion capped off a marathon battle that saw both teams trade chances and test each other's limits. The Panthers struck first in the second period with a goal from Sam Reinhart, but the Hurricanes responded quickly with a power-play equalizer from Andrei Svechnikov. Tkachuk gave Florida the lead once again late in the third period with a power-play tally, but Carolina's Sebastian Aho found the net with just 49 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

Neither team could break the deadlock in the three extra periods that followed, but Tkachuk's timely intervention in the fourth overtime sealed the victory for the Panthers. The goal marked the longest overtime game in NHL playoff history since 2003.

With the series now tied at 1-1, the Hurricanes will host Game 2 on Saturday night in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Panthers will aim to capitalize on their momentum and take a series lead on the road, while the Hurricanes will be determined to bounce back and level the playing field.
