Matthew Tkachuk's late heroics gave the Florida Panthers a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. With just 13 seconds remaining in the fourth overtime period, Tkachuk swatted in a rebound past Carolina goaltender Antti Raanta to secure the dramatic triumph.
The thrilling conclusion capped off a marathon battle that saw both teams trade chances and test each other's limits. The Panthers struck first in the second period with a goal from Sam Reinhart, but the Hurricanes responded quickly with a power-play equalizer from Andrei Svechnikov. Neither team could break the deadlock in the three extra periods that followed, but Tkachuk's timely intervention in the fourth overtime sealed the victory for the Panthers. The goal marked the longest overtime game in NHL playoff history since 2003.
